The Louisiana Gun Laws

The State of Louisiana, is located in the Southern part, of the United States of America, and, therefore, has truly casual gun laws as compared to other States. Some of the notable Louisiana gun laws are as follows:

·        Overall, Louisiana is often referred to as, “a gun loving State”. This is because; of its lenient gun laws, in as far as possession and purchase of firearms are concerned.

·        The age limit for purchase of a hand gun in Louisiana is 21 years. In addition, the age limit for purchase of rifles and shotguns is 18 years.

·        In Louisiana, there is no requirement for registration of firearms under the law.

·        There is also, no requirement for possession of a gun license.

·        Unlike other States, in Louisiana, there is no restriction on the possession of long guns, like rifles and shotguns.

·        Louisiana gun laws also put no restrictions on the transportation of loaded guns in cars. The guns can, therefore, be transported without possession of a license.

·        It is, however, illegal to carry loaded guns into public places. Public places include schools, hospitals, government buildings and places of worship. It is, therefore, illegal to carry loaded guns into places that have been designated as gun barred.

·        The strictest part of Louisiana gun laws is the prohibition of carrying concealed weapons. A concealed weapon is defined to be, one that cannot be seen, but can easily be reached. Carrying of these weapons is prohibited, if the carrier does not have a license or permit to do so.

·        In order, to qualify to get a concealed weapon permit, certain qualities have to be present. For example, the applicant should be, of or above the age of 21 and a resident of Louisiana for the last six months. In addition, the applicant is supposed to have passed a gun training and safety course. The applicant should also not have been, convicted of a felony. Any history of drug abuse or mental illness will automatically disqualify the applicant, from being eligible for the permit.

·        The processing of the permit takes a period of about ten days.

·        Once the permit has been awarded, it is only valid for four years, after which, it is subject to renewal. The permit is, therefore, supposed to be renewed every four years.

·        The Louisiana law does not require gun dealers to keep any records whatsoever. Gun shops and dealers can, therefore, carry out their business without having to record the names of the people who have purchased from them. These dealers are also, not subject to police inspection.

It is noted that, the State of Louisiana has adopted extremely flexible gun laws. This is mostly because of its location and gun tolerant history. It is, however, essential to note that, though its laws are lenient, the State has adopted a number of miscellaneous laws. These miscellaneous laws make it, to be, illegal to tamper with gun numbers, or to change the identity of the gun in any way.
